What Is Neo-CONservatism?
For most of my adult life I have considered myself a Social Liberal! I am proud of it! I know what I stand for and I know what Social Liberalism is! Social Liberalism emphasizes individual rights, equal opportunity, educational reform, civil rights, human rights, civil liberties, World Diplomacy not World Democracy, and universal health care. Social Liberals Demand that government provide a basic level of health, education, and welfare. Yeah sure there are many more issues that would fit under the platform of a Social Liberal but these are a few of the basic concepts.
I often asked myself why would anyone want to consider themselves a Conservative? The whole Idea seems crazy to me. I wanted to understand what was Neo-Conservatism and what were the origins of Neo-Conservatism. I wanted to be able to look into the mind of a NeoCON! What I found was startling. I found that Neo-CONservatism basically is Economic Liberalism mixed with Social Conservatism. It originated in the 1960's and 70's as a movement of anti-Soviet Liberals and Social Democrats in the tradition of Truman, Kennedy, Johnson, and Henry "Scoop" Jackson. STRONGLY anti-counterculture, many of whom preferred to call themselves 'paleoliberals'. After the Cold War many of the 'paleoliberals' went back to the Democratic Party (Regan Dems)todays NeoCONs are a shrunken remnant of the original broad NeoCON Coalition.
For the NeoCONservatives, religion is an instrument of promoting morality . Religion becomes what Plato called a noble lie! It is a myth which is told to the majority of the society by the philosophical elite in order to ensure social order.
Irving Kristol, that's right Bill Kristol's dad was one of prominent founders of NeoConservatism. Irving Kristol wrote : "If there is any one thing that NeoConservatives are unanimous about, it is their dislike of the counterculture. Irving Kristol called NeoConservatism a "liberal mugged by reality," one who became more conservative after seeing the results of liberal policies. Irving Kristol claims three distinctive aspects of NeoConservatism from previous forms of Conservatism: a forward looking approach drawn from their liberal heritage, rather than the reactionary an dour approach of previous conservatives, a melioraive outlook, proposing alternate reforms rather than simply attacking social liberal reforms, taking philosophical or ideological ideas very seriously. Political Philosopher Leo Strauss was an important intellectual of NeoConservatism.
The NeoCON hate campaign against the counterculture helped grow their ranks. Ira Chermus argued that the deepest root of the NeoCON Movement is its fear that the counterculture would undermine the authority of traditional values and morals which would lead to "Social Chaos".
Another of the Basic NeoCON principles is believing that America should "Export Democracy", spread it ideals of government, economics, and culture abroad. NeoCONs hate U.S. reliance on International organizations and treaties to accomplish there objectives. Joe Klein, wrote in TIME magazine that NeoCONs are more interested in confronting enemies than cultivating friends. He questioned the sincerity of NeoCONs interest in "Exporting Democracy" and freedom saying that "NeoConservatism in foreign Policy is best described as unilateral bellicosity cloaked in the Utopian rhetoric of freedom and democracy." John McGowan, professor of humanities at the University of North Carolina said that,"NeoCONs are attempting to build an American Empire, seen as successor to the British Empire, its aim being the perpetuate a Pax Americana. As Imperialism is largely seen as unacceptable by the American public, NeoCONs do not articulate their ideas and goals in a frank manner in public discourse".
NeoCONservatives are proposing Imperialsim as the alternative to Liberal Internationalism. Yet NeoCons know that Imperialism runs counter to America's Liberal tradition that it must remain a foreign policy that they dare not speak in NAME. Robert Kaplan said that, "Only through stealth and anxious foresight" can the United States continue to pursue the "Imperial reality that already dominates our foreign policy," but must be disavowed in light of "our anti-imperial traditions, and the fact that imperialism is delegitimized in pubic discourse." This is why the Bush Administration, justified all of its actions by an appeal to "National Security," and has kept as many of those actions as it can secret and has scorned all limitations to executive power by the branches of government or international law.......
According to Libertarian Republican Party Congressman Ron Paul, NeoCONs want Permanent Revolution (Spreading Democracy All over the World in order to Control the World)want to use force to redraw the map of the Middle East, believe in preemptive war and using armed forces to force American Ideals on others, believe that the ends justify the means, do not really oppose the "welfare state" and a powerful federal government, endorse an "American Empire" and progressive imperialism, and unconditionally support Israel.
It is clear what they want. It is clear what they will do to obtain it. The only thing standing in their way is the "Progressive Movement". We have to advance our agenda. We have to continue to fight for populist ideals. This election will be a turning point in World History! Do we given in to Neo-Conservatism or will the Progressive Movement sweep the country? We get to decide!
