We have been through a lot in the last 3 to 4 years. We've seen our economy teeter on the brink of collapse. We've seen thousands of Jobs go overseas. We've seen our brave men and women travel abroad, fighting two wars to defend our freedoms right here at home. We've seen our political process become more and more bitter, divisive and down right ineffective.
With the election of Barack Obama as the first black President, we've seen that most people in this country are ready to move past our ugly past of racism, and Jim Crow. But we've also seen that there are still some who want to hold on to that dark past, expressing hate and anger over the fact that a Black man is in the White House. We've seen partisan gridlock basically cripple Washington, DC and political posturing and grandstanding dominate our legislature in Raleigh.
One might ask themselves what makes anyone in politics think they can make a difference in this political climate? What gives people the belief that they can have an impact when all to often the ones with the most money and power have the most say in what goes on? What makes us believe our one little ol vote counts?
In 2008 Barack Hussein Obama, a little known, first term US Senator from Illinois had the Audacity to believe he could be President of the United States. He was right. But he had the help of 2,142,651 North Carolinians. And only won the state by a mere 14,177 votes. Who says 1 vote doesn't count? One vote adds up to thousands, Millions. We ALL can make a difference, but you can't if you stay home. Get up, Get Out, Get Active and Go Vote!
The deadline to register to vote is October 12th, so hurry and get that done! Early voting begins October 18th. Vote EARLY! Deadline to return absentee ballots is November 5th, and election day is November 6th.
The Democratic Party has some great candidates on the ballot nationally and on the state and local level. I urge everyone to take a good look at all the candidates and to decide for yourself who deserves your vote.
The republican party has decided the way forward is to cut education, cut medicare, cut social security and to give huge tax cuts to millionaires and billionaires.
The Democratic party believes the way forward is to invest in America. To invest in Education, to invest in American manufacturing, to invest in agriculture, domestic energy production, renewable forms of energy and to invest in the middle class.
We don't believe the way forward is by cutting things down, we believe the way forward is through building things up! Through growing our economy, through adding jobs. There are two clear choices in this election: Forward or Backward. Those that Vote get to decide.
Voting is our right, to many have fought, bleed and died defending that right. We have an obligation to those brave men and women who have defended that right in past and in the present to vote so we can help preserve our future. It doesn't matter your political ideology or party affiliation, go vote! If you don't vote, you don't count!
